Abstract
Recognition by civil engineers of the variability in materials has led inevitably to the application of statistical quality control techniques, particularly in acceptance specifications, to reduce risks and costs for both the producer and the consumer. Eventually, acceptance specifications will provide for defect classification, sampling plans, and followup action. Guides based on corroborated theory enable reliable prediction of production output. Research and development efforts now in process will produce basic parameters for sampling plans applicable in the construction industry. Such plans, using simple procedures at the inspector's level, will reduce costs for both producer and consumer, and will yield much more precise measurements of the quality of the end product.
