Landing Area Facilities

Publication: Journal of the Aero-Space Transport Division
Volume 91, Issue 2

Abstract

The report is a compilation of three papers. The first deals with the development of the supersonic aircraft in the United States. Although there is confidence that technical problems can be met, questions of economics and sonic boom are far from resolved. The second examines the FAA report on airport capacity. The report was prepared for use by airport designers and operators (1) to aid in determining whether or not existing airports are being used to full capacity, (2) to determine the most effective modifications to the airport, and (3) to plan new airports able to cope with the steadily increasing flow of aircraft traffic. The report is analyzed and annotated. The third paper considers the factors in the airway system pertinent to the airport planner, namely (1) airport location, (2) instrument runway direction, (3) interference between airports, (4) provisions for airway facilities, and (5) airport capacity.
