Professional Schools: The Debate Continues
Publication: Issues in Engineering: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 108, Issue 4
Abstract
The development of a strong unified profession of engineering should start with a careful restructuring of our educational units. Engineering education is in a state of disarray and cannot provide the leadership necessary to unify the profession. All learned professions have some graduate education requirement, and engineering would do well to evaluate the graduate professional school approach of other professions. Abraham Flexner's criteria for a practicing professional are recommended as applicable to the engineering profession.
