President's Inaugural Speech: October 24, 1979

The 1979 Presidential address was concerned with problems of the 1980's. These include energy and environmental issues, and the future of the ASCE. The Society must initiate programs on the national and local levels. The Energy Action Program, coordinated by William R. Gibbs, is moving to each member of Congress. Other problems include convincing the public that the energy crisis is real. And this requires the use of various types of energy, excluding the high-cost non-renewable types of power. The problems of environmental requlations must protect our environment—and this only with the close participation of engineers directed toward the most efficient use of these regulations. A major problem is the introduction of younger members of the Society into active work of our organization, with better help from employers of civil engineers, who are themselves members of our Society.
