Abstract

A method of improving educational opportunities for graduate students seeking careers in the consulting engineering profession is proposed. Support for these graduate students by the consulting engineering profession is justified. Support includes stipends for students and assistance from the consultants in identifying research project suitable for individual, thesis-type study by these students. The projects are expected to benefit directly the supporting consulting engineering organizations because they will address problems currently facing these organizations. Students, training to begin careers in the consulting engineering field, will benefit from the financial support, but more importantly from participation in projects which address problems similar to those they will face in their chosen profession. The net effect of consultant's support of these programs will be higher quality graduate engineering education, and the development of a larger pool of young engineers better trained to enter the consulting engineering profession.
