Abstract

The presentation describes a problem-situation affecting engineers that has developed in one of the eastern states, which problem is not too dissimilar from thsoe developing in many other areas at the present time. A brief presentation will be given of some specific public affairs actions taken by a local section in the western part of the country acting in a positive and professional way to meet certain local challenges. A brief outline is given of the publication Guidelines for Engaging in Public Affairs Activities, the first publication effort by the Committee. The single most important thing, the key to effective ASCE action, is the development of rapid communication channels internal and external to the Section. This is mandatory in order that upcoming public issues/or appointments are known early enough for ASCE to act with maximum effectiveness. In short, action not reaction is the key.
