Professional Recognition—How?
Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 98, Issue 2
Abstract
When engineers talk about professional recognition today, they are referring to what they consider to be the higher regard given to members of the medical, dental, and legal professions. As the revered professions lengthened and upgraded the educational requirements, improved the registration requriements, kept watch on those who practiced the profession, and insisted on membership in appropriate technical and professional societies, so will the engineers have to do these same things to gain the recognition we hope for. Being able to get a minimum passing grade for 16 hrs of examination may be adequate to safeguard the health, welfare and safety of the public, but it is not enough to be revered as a professional person.
