Hurricane Surge Computations by Computer

Using the Bathystrphic Storm Tide Theory, a mathematical model of a hurricane has been developed. This paper describes a computer program which will solve this model and yield the total surge elevation at various time increments as a hurricane approaches the shoreline. This calculated surge is the result of the wind stress generated by the storm both along the shore and perpendicular to the shore. In addition, it takes into account atmospheric pressure reduction, initial rise, and astronomic tide. To run the program only the traverse or path of the storm and the particular hurricane parameters must be known. This program was developed for use in the design of coastal nuclear power plants.
