Abstract
Lock sizes used in the United States and reasons for their selection are considered. Standard sizes presently in use by the Corps of Engineers are presented, with tabulations of the number of locks built or under construction in the period from 1940 through 1967, of both standard and nonstandard sizes. Of the 129 locks built or under construction in this period, it is shown that 31 different sizes have been used. Forty of the 129 locks were sizes adopted by the Corps of Engineers in 1957. Tow sizes in relation to lock sizes are presented. Desirable minimum clearances in length and width between lock chamber walls and gates for large tows are suggested. Standards for maximum tow sizes permitted for various locks are suggested and regulations to prevent encroachment on clearances are considered. New standard lock sizes for various sizes of waterways are also suggested.
