Abstract
This technical note presents a simple design tool to choose the safe spacing for soldier beams in unsheathed excavations in soils having both cohesion and friction. It does not deal with, however, more complicated conditions created by surcharge, seepage, slaking, or local weak planes. Soils are assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and to obeying the Coulomb.s criteria of shear strength.
