Modeling of Clay Uplift Resistance

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 6

Abstract

In the uplift problem in clays, the self-weight of the clay can have a significant effect on total uplift resistance under certain conditions. The majority of model uplift resistance tests performed to date has failed to account for this effect by neglecting the principles of dimensional similarity. It is demonstrated in this paper, by means of dimensional analysis, when caution must be exercised in interpreting the results of model uplift resistance tests in clay in terms of the prototype. The approach adopted could be applied to other similar problems where model tests are envisaged.
