Abstract
A computer-oriented method of analysis, using the limiting equilibrium principle and satisfying all the conditions of equilibrium, is presented for the determination of the bearing capacity of uniformly loaded shallow strip footings. The soils mass above a potential failure surface is divided into a number of vertical slices and the basic equations of equilibrium are derived in terms of effective stresses. To render the problem statistically determinate, a relationship of the form T=λf(x)E߱, as proposed by Morgenstern and Price for the analysis of slope stability problems, is assumed connecting the vertical component, T, and the horizontal component, E߱, of the interslice forces. The investigation uses two possible failure mechanisms and three f(x) distributions. A number of examples are solved involving different types of soils, depth/width ratios, and positions of ground-water level. Comparison is made with the results from other theories of bearing capacity.
