Submarine Siphons for Athens Sewerage System

Publication: Coastal Engineering 1988

Abstract

The submarine siphons with an overall length of almost 1300 meters and an ultimate capacity of 27 cubic meters (m3) per second (about 600 million gallons per day) will be a major element of the new wastewater conveyance and treatment system presently under construction in Athen, Greece. This will help alleviate the present condition where an average of more than 6 m3 per second (130 million gallons per day) of untreated domestic and industrial wastewater are discharged into the sea near Athens. Construction of the submarine siphon pipes started in late 1984 and was completed in early 1987.
Description of the data collection for and the design, manufacture and construction of these submarine siphons are presented in this paper.
