Outfall Diffusion Models for the Coastal Zone

Publication: Coastal Engineering 1978

Abstract

Two approaches for developing outfall diffusion models for the coastal zone are discussed. The statistical model combines a simple Gaussian analysis with the time-series records of flow measurements to elucidate the dispersion patterns in a shore-parallel, a current-reversal, and stagnation flow regimes. The deterministic model explores the more complex characteristics of a plume in an advection-dominant situation. The cases of Fickian diffusion, shear diffusion, and inertial subrange hypothesis are studied. It is shown that a previously derived semi-empirical relationship produces an agreement at least as good as the optimized results of these theoretical models. These models are quite useful for site specific evaluation of potential continuous discharges of effluents into the coastal zone.
