Influence of Ground-Borne Vibrations from the Installation of Rockfill Columns on a Buried Structure

ABSTRACT
Study of ground-borne vibration has been developed since 1960, but little is known if wave propagation in the ground may directly affect buried utilities. In this research, the vibration from the installation of rockfill columns in a riverbank is investigated numerically. Finite element models were calibrated with field data from a site with a buried aqueduct nearby. The calibrated models were used to evaluate the vibratory response of the ground in terms of particle velocities and frequency spectra on the aqueduct walls. Results show that the softer soil layers keep the waves longer and particle velocities are higher in the long term. Particle velocities tend to increase around the aqueduct. The soil-structure interaction changes the shape of the wave and lowers its frequency to a range within the natural frequency of the soil. This change in frequency could impose movements on the aqueduct if it is allowed to move freely with the soil.
