Augmented Reality and Wearable Technology-Supported Biophilic Design of Senior Housing for Improving Quality of Life in Older Adults

ABSTRACT

The increasing demand for senior housing has led to efforts to transform senior housing design to enhance the quality of life of older adults. The sustainable design theory of biophilia posits that humans are biologically encoded to have an affinity to natural systems and processes. Biophilic design has shown the potential to provide benefits associated with emotional well-being, healing, and cognitive performance. However, it is challenging to identify the impact of biophilic design on older adults, mainly due to the overlooked and misinterpreted preferences, perceptions, and needs of older adults. To address this challenge, this research proposes to create a new framework to simulate daily activities in an augmented reality environment with specific biophilic design strategies and interventions. The proposed method also involves collecting real-time biofeedback data from older adults using wearable devices and accessing the cognitive processes and responses of older adults using cognitive tests.
