100% Recycled Asphalt Mixtures as Base Course for Parking Lots
Publication: ASCE Inspire 2023
ABSTRACT
Asphalt continues to be reclaimed and reused more than any other product in the US, and cold asphalt pavement recycling takes sustainability one step further. As its name implies, cold recycling is an asphalt pavement rehabilitation method without the application of heat during the construction process. This economical technique is not only effective in eliminating distresses of asphalt pavements but also conserves non-renewable resources and energy. In this case study, cold central plant recycling (CCPR) was used for its benefits and applicability to rehabilitate parking lots. The objective of this document is to present energy and materials saving results, and emissions reduction of a CCPR base asphalt course produced for parking lots of a major retailer in the US. On average, for a 23,226 m2 (250,000 ft2) parking area, the built pavement yielded 50% in production energy savings, 42% reduction in GHG emissions, and 5,195 t of material were saved rather than mined, which adds up to 346 truck trips.
