Chapter 1
Introduction
Publication: Wind Loads: Guide to the Wind Load Provisions of ASCE 7-22
Abstract
Wind load criteria are based on the understanding of aerodynamics of wind pressures in building corners, eaves, and ridge areas, as well as the effects of area averaging on pressures. The analytical procedures used to determine design wind loads typically involve the selection of a basic design wind speed that reflects a certain annual probability of exceedance at the site, modified by terrain roughness related factors, topographic factors, if any, and air density considerations to produce reference velocity pressure(s) that is site specific and appropriate for use with other factors that are specific to the building or structure being designed. This chapter provides a background discussion of the relative importance of the various parameters, procedures, and provisions used to determine wind loads. Wind loads on buildings and structures are affected by complex fluid structure interactions. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the book.
