2020 Dolan Fire
Publication: Highway 1 Rat Creek Embankment Failure: 2021 Reconnaissance and Analysis
Abstract
Wildfires are known to disrupt typical hydrological operations and conditions by reducing soil hydraulic conductivity and infiltration of rainfall into soil. The Dolan wildfire ignited on August 18, 2020, and is believed to be caused by arson. The fire burned more than 500 km2 with less than 10% of the area within the fire perimeter considered unburned. The fire was considered 98% contained on October 13, 2020, and fully contained on December 31, 2020. Despite a quick recovery time, the debris flow hazard is expected to remain high for two to three years. By five to seven years after a wildfire, the postfire effects are usually minimal, and the surface water runoff rates return to near prefire levels. Regions of higher debris flow potential (60% to 100%) exist throughout a large portion of the Dolan wildfire area.
