Hetch-Hetchy Water Supply Reliability across Sunol Valley

ABSTRACT

The Hetch-Hetchy Reservoir located 160 miles from the San Francisco Bay Area is a major source of water to 2.7 million people. Just east of the greater Bay Area, Hetch-Hetchy pipelines, bringing close to 300 million gallons per day of water, cross the narrow Sunol Valley in an east-west direction. A north-south trending seismically active Northern Calaveras Fault located along the eastern margins of the Sunol Valley cuts across the running pipelines. Considered one of the most active faults in the Bay Area, with the expected rupture displacement of more than four feet lateral and one foot vertical, the fault poses a major threat to reliable transmission of water to the Bay Area. To improve water transmission reliability across the Sunol Valley, a new pipeline and related infrastructure was designed to withstand the expected fault rupture displacement and provide a continuous supply of 120 million gallons per day.
