Advanced Modeling Techniques Make the First and Last Miles the Best Miles at the Port of Long Beach

ABSTRACT
The large railroad network connecting West Coast ports and major inland markets is one of the most efficient freight transportation systems in the world. Strategies are continually evolving to use the network to move containers faster and more efficiently. To realize the full potential of this rail network, it is important that the first and last mile of the network can keep up with this pace. The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is a critical link in the global supply chain and is focused on evolving its on-dock rail system to attract shippers and rail carriers to improve the level of service and intermodal productivity. The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility is a key part of the POLB rail investment program that ensures its productivity and competitiveness for years to come.
