ABSTRACT

The Mw 7.8 2016 Ecuador earthquake caused significant damage to the Port of Manta located in Ecuador. The port has several facilities including a rockfill breakwater, two international piers, 17 small fishing marginal wharves, buildings, several storage yards, and roads. Most of its infrastructure experienced different levels of damage. Liquefaction and soil lateral spreading were determined as the main causes of the port damage. After the earthquake, the port’s infrastructure went through a systematic process that included the rehabilitation design of existing infrastructure, and the design of new facilities. This paper presents the studies performed in order to rehabilitate the facilities of the Port of Manta. The paper describes the techniques used to rehabilitate the structural facilities such as the international piers, fishing marginal wharves, and the operations building. Finally, the paper describes the techniques used to rehabilitate the geotechnical facilities such as the breakwater, the yards, and the internal roads.
