Multi-Objective Optimization Method for Network-Level Decision Making of Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation

ABSTRACT
Roads deteriorate, hence periodic maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) is necessary to improve the road condition. Different M&R treatments result in different outcomes, and decision-making should design appropriate M&R strategies to the segments of road networks. Hence Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) is increasingly applied. To better assist with M&R decision-making, a set of sufficient and well distributed Pareto solutions are needed, while this can be different without an effective algorithm. This paper developed a MOO method that optimizes the multi-objective M&R decision making of road networks and generates both supported and non-supported solutions for M&R decisions. It also introduces different algorithms for comparison purposes. A case based on practical data was studied. According to the result, the developed method can effectively handle multiple objectives and constraints, generate a set of sufficient and well distributed solutions including, and therefore assist with the M&R decision-making of road networks.
