Perceptions of Augmented and Virtual Reality Technologies Adoption within the AEC Industry

ABSTRACT

Building Information Modelling (BIM), integrated with innovative visualization technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), can provide a holistic and system-driven approach at every stage of the building life cycle. The Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, relative to other industries, has been slow in adopting AR/VR technologies, partly due to a lack of feasibility studies examining the actual cost of implementation versus an increase in profit. AR and VR have the potential to improve projects’ overall performance, simplify construction processes, and boost stakeholder collaboration. However, there is still a lack of proper understanding of how well such new technologies have been adopted, how much time and cost can be saved, and what limitations do users have. This paper aims to explore the current level of understanding of AR/VR technologies adoption in the AEC industry. To investigate the adoption of AR/VR at the company level, implementation in projects, benefits, and obstacles of using AR/VR, a survey is distributed to the AEC industry professionals across the United States. Responses from 158 industry experts as well as academic researchers are evaluated to assess the current state, growth, and saving opportunities of AR/VR technologies in the AEC industry.
