BIM Based Damage Assessment on the Example of Cracks in Concrete Structures

ABSTRACT

Digital methods, in particular building information modeling (BIM), are being used more and more in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. However, building operation and maintenance processes mainly still follow conventional processes and are hardly supported by digital databases. Research at Leibniz Universität Hannover investigates a fundamental concept for digitally supported maintenance of railway infrastructure to enhance availability as well as reliability and provide a structured data basis for the involved project participants. The paper will answer the question on how a product model in the context of BIM can be used to evaluate the bridge health combining different data sources. Therefore, a new evaluation method based on a three-dimensional damage characterization was developed, which uses the data from the BIM model to quantify the grade of maintenance need.
