Advanced Warning System for Safer Interaction between Vehicles and Vulnerable Road Users

ABSTRACT

A driving simulator experiment was used to determine if an advanced warning message (in the form of auditory and visual cues) can have an impact on the detection of pedestrians/bicyclists. While twenty-one participants were recruited for the experiment, the analysis was performed for data collected from 19 participants. The participants were asked to detect the presence of pedestrians/bicyclists by pressing a button device on the steering wheel. The warning system was activated at 20, 30, and 40 s ahead from reaching a pedestrian/bicyclist. When the warning system was activated, statistical tests suggest that participants detected the presence of pedestrians/bicyclists 25 ft earlier than when no warning system was activated. The variances in the location where pedestrians/bicyclists were detected were lower when the warning system was activated. When the warning system was activated, for most events (approximately 73%), there was a speed reduction of 4.9 mph on average observed.
