ABSTRACT
Holiday tourism congestion has affected the tourist experience. This paper explores tourists’ congestion coping behavior. First, this paper analyzes the influence of personal attributes, travel characteristics, and tourism characteristics on coping behaviors before and during travel. Second, it creates a two-step model considering behavior in response to congestion before and during travel. Finally, the paper analyzes tourists’ influencing factors and behavioral characteristics based on questionnaire data. The results show that 40.29% of tourists respond to congestion before they travel, and 25.21% of tourists take steps to avoid congestion during their visit. Occupation, information, travel scope, travel mode, and other factors have significant impacts on tourists’ congestion coping behavior before travel. Family size, number of previous visits, and composition of the group also have an impact. This study serves as a theoretical basis for the management of holiday scenic spots and the formulation of travel guidance.
