ABSTRACT
It has been recognized that the modern roundabouts can be an effective alternative to improve safety and level of service, but they can be cost prohibitive and lengthy if additional right of way is needed. In recently years, mini roundabouts, which are generally set with a fully traversable central island with no need of additional right of way, have been recognized as safety and efficiency alternative to the intersections under low-speed urban environments with average operating speeds of 30 mph. This paper focuses on the characteristics, design, cost, performance, and relevant best practices of the mini roundabout system. The before and after analysis made by various city and county departments have shown compelling results to draw the conclusion why the mini roundabout is a viable option to lookout for. Such an understanding will provide policy implications on the design and layout of intersection in a low speed environment.
