ABSTRACT
To address the congestion and safety at intersections, we excavated a large quantity of urban traffic data using a data-driven method and designed a smart dual traffic light system based on greedy strategy. The system sets two traffic lights in the same phase and vehicle waiting safety distance. The first traffic light is used to inform drivers of the probability to cross the intersection so that the drivers can pre-decide their crossing speed. The second traffic light is used to determine whether the vehicle behind can pass the intersection so that it can handle a high traffic volume. Through experimental verification, this method can control the behavior of the vehicle passing through the intersection effectively, avoid traffic congestion, and improve the traffic volume.
