Analysis of Adaptability of Porous Asphalt Mixture to Heavy-Duty Asphalt Pavements

ABSTRACT

The application of porous asphalt [open-graded friction course (OGFC)] mixture on roads with heavy traffic loads is topical. The anti-rutting and anti-stripping performance and water stability of OGFC are evaluated by conducting rutting Cantabro loss, and freeze–thaw splitting strength tests, respectively. The study chose three different gradations and nine kinds of asphalts and stone mastic asphalt (SMA) as a reference. The results show that OGFC’s rutting depth is slightly deeper than that of SMA, using the APA rutting test. However, OGFC’s sensitivity to rutting, load level and number, and temperature are lower than that of SMA. High viscosity asphalt, appropriate gradation composition, and certain formation conditions improve OGFC’s rutting resistance. The water stability of OGFC is equivalent to that of SMA when choosing a freeze–thaw splitting strength indicator. The anti-stripping of OGFC using high viscosity asphalt is slightly lower than that of SMA, using a Cantabro loss indicator.
