Unified Facilities Criteria Program and UFC 4-152-01 Design: Piers and Wharves

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses UFC 4-152-01 Design: Piers and Wharves, in context of the DoD Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) Program, and the efforts of the Waterfront Working Group in the process of revising this UFC to provide minimum facility planning and design criteria for the efficient homeporting facilities of DoD vessels. The 2017 revision of UFC 4-152-01 Design: Piers and Wharves represents a continued tri-service effort to bring uniformity to the criteria for the planning, design, and construction of Department of Defense (DoD) piers and wharves. This UFC superseded MIL-HDBK-1025/1, which superseded Design Manual (DM) 25.1, which superseded DM-25 (Chapter 1)… going back to yard and dock criteria used to establish the first public shipyards and original naval bases. The intent of UFC 4-152-01 is to provide minimum facility planning and design criteria for pier and wharf construction. It has been developed from extensive re-evaluation of facilities and is intended for use by experienced waterfront engineers and facility planners for engineering studies and design. The contents cover piers and wharves including such considerations as overall dimensions and clearances, live load requirements, structural design (including ASCE 61 seismic design), fender systems, deck fittings, separators, access facilities, and appurtenances.
