Corrosion Protection of Ductile Iron Pipe for a Large Diameter Transmission Main Project

Publication: Pipelines 2019: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation

ABSTRACT

Tri-County Water Authority treats water and wholesales for cities and public water supply districts in Jackson, Cass, and Bates Counties in Missouri. The Water Treatment Plant and original transmission system were built in 1993, with expansions in 1999 and 2005. Further expansion began in 2015. This expansion included installing a parallel transmission main to an existing 16-inch ductile iron pipe main. Due to the frequency of failures with existing pipeline materials, Tri-County underwent a material selection process. The result of this process was Tri-County determined ductile iron pipe with polyethylene encasement would provide the overall best value for its customers. As design was nearing completion, Tri-County learned of zinc-coated ductile iron pipe and negotiated with a manufacturer to supply the pipe for use in known corrosive areas of the project. This paper will review the project and test results from corrosion monitoring equipment installed on the Tri-County pipeline in August 2016.
