AWWA C305—A New Standard for CFRP Renewal and Strengthening of PCCP

Publication: Pipelines 2019: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation

ABSTRACT

The new American Water Works Association (AWWA) standard C305 for carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) renewal and strengthening of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) has been approved by AWWA. The standard is based on load and resistance factor design for a service life expected for infrastructure. It provides requirements that ensure strength, durability, reliability, and weathertightness of CFRP during the entire service life of the liner on par with other construction materials. The paper will discuss the advantages of CFRP liner relative to other construction materials, provide a brief history of the development of the standard, discuss the purpose and scope of the standard, and review the major provisions of the standard for material system design, installation, and quality control and assurance of CFRP liner repair of distressed PCCPs or for strengthening PCCPs. It also presents a summary of the theoretical and experimental bases of the provisions. Although the standard is developed for PCCP, its provisions can be applied to other concrete pressure pipes. The standard enables utilities to use CFRP liners as a permanent repair technique.
