Rehabilitation of 75-Year-Old Cast Iron Water Line in Historic District
Publication: Pipelines 2019: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation
ABSTRACT
The city of Houston is facing a challenge with an existing 30, and 36-inch cast iron water line concentrated in the vicinity of the city’s Museum District and the Galleria Mall retail and business area, and surrounded by majestic live oak trees. The lines were constructed in the 1940s and consist of cast grey iron material with lead caulked joints. The leak history of these lines makes them a maintenance burden for the city, and causing disruption to businesses and residents in the area. However, coupons cut from the existing line indicate the existing pipeline is structurally sound and free of corrosion—the problem was at the joints. This paper will review the issues involved in the trenchless rehabilitation method with the least possible surface disruption.
