Developing a V2I Monitoring and Early Warning System for Safe Driving on Waterlogged Roads

Publication: CICTP 2019

Abstract

Due to the uneven surface of many roads and backward construction of drainage facilities in China, water is easily gathered at low-lying road sections, especially during the rainy season. To guarantee safe driving, we propose in this paper a V2I monitoring and early warning system. We apply the ultrasonic detection technology first to collect information about the waterlogged road, and the installation layout of the device is designed. Then, by using a single chip microcomputer, data on water depth are processed to reduce potential errors and to improve the accuracy of the measurements. Finally, based on the ZigBee wireless communication technology, we develop a V2I information interaction system, which adopts a roadside LED water depth display screen and buzzer to remind drivers with different types of vehicles. The system is tested at the simulated low-lying road sections and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.
