Modification of Wind Pressure Distribution on Tall Buildings Due to Variation in Height of the Interfering Building

ABSTRACT

The study presents the effect of interference on wind pressure distribution on tall buildings having rectangular plan shape due to the presence of a closely located interfering building having a similar plan shape but with a variation in height. The effect of interference is studied by placing the interfering building in front of the principal building perpendicular to it, in such a manner that it forms a L-shape pattern in plan. The height of the interfering building is varied keeping the location same. Results of the pressure measurements are reported in this paper for different heights of the interfering building, in the form of contour plots for both mean as well as fluctuating component on different faces of the principal building. Large amount of torsion is developed due to the L-shape pattern arrangement of the buildings. It is evident from the pressure contours that the wind pressure distribution on different faces of the principal building gets highly altered due to the presence of an interfering building. Negative pressure (suction) is observed on the windward face in the zone where interfering building is present.
