A Modeling Approach to Construction Waste Management

Publication: Urbanization Challenges in Emerging Economies: Resilience and Sustainability of Infrastructure

ABSTRACT

Formulating waste management plans in the construction industry are difficult because of complex issues that may depend on the characteristics of the work force, type of equipment used, construction methods/technology adopted, management practices, and government policies in effect. Construction and demolition waste (C&D) need to be managed to minimize the environmental burden in India. Abundant techniques such as LEED, BREEAM focused on building design phase but suitable techniques have not been developed during the construction execution phase in Indian scenario. Addressing this problem is limited in its application due to various factors. Therefore, present study has been introduced to detangle and investigate various reasons for the failure of implementation of C&D waste management in their companies. The opinions on implementing waste management during execution stage were collected using questionnaire survey and results were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis. The significant factors enabling or deterring the implementation of site waste management plans are grouped into five categories. The factors have been modeled using structural equation modelling (SEM) to assess the path loadings of variables to their corresponding categories. The results concluded that variables relating to education of labor in workforce, preparation of excess perishable material in material category. No GST on equipment used for recycling in government policies, maintaining documents related to waste management in records and documents, analyzing alternate routes for waste disposal at site to avoid trafficking in onsite waste management category are found to have greater impacts in their corresponding categories. The outcomes from the study help the construction firms to explore in deep the barriers which lead to improvement as well as development of waste management policies in Indian construction industry.
