ABSTRACT
The Middlesex Water Company (MWC), discovered a large leak near a 30-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) transmission main in November 2016. After confirming the location of the leak, MWC went through a deliberative repair evaluation process to determine the most suitable repair. During the repair method evaluation, several options were considered including conventional open cut replacement, slip lining, construction of a new crossing, and internal carbon fiber reinforced polymer repair (CFRP). After an extensive evaluation, MWC chose to proceed with a stand-alone internal CFRP rehabilitation. Several construction challenges were overcome during the repair, including significant water intrusion due to heavy rainfall.
