Deployment of an Airborne Polymeric Liner for Water Main Renewal

ABSTRACT

Polymeric liners offer very competitive lining options for aging, buried water infrastructure. This paper presents the technical background and a case study for the deployment of polymeric linings inside water pipes using a tethered aerodynamic shape in a flowing airstream. Polymeric linings are conventionally applied inside of water pipes using computerized spray rigs. A new, simplified application method offers advantages for the rapid, economic application of a polymeric barrier lining inside of a water pipe. The authors were involved in the development, testing, and field deployment of this new method. This paper explores the details of development, testing, and validation for airborne polymeric lining. A case study is also included in support of the commercial deployment of this method for users needing AWWA Class I barrier linings for aging pipes.
