Twenty Years of Protecting Concrete in Sewers
Publication: Pipelines 2018: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation
ABSTRACT
Air, fire, water, and earth are all necessary for the survival of mankind. However, these same necessities can also prove to be sources of great destruction when out of our control. The same principle holds true for the most ubiquitous creature on earth; the microorganism. Both harmful and beneficial microorganisms exist everywhere that water and the appropriate nutrients are available for their growth and survival. Sewer systems are perfect examples of how this process known as MIC “microbiologically induced corrosion” produces sulfuric acid which has destroyed millions of concrete structures such as manholes, pumping stations, and sewer pipe. Over the years, scientists’ have developed chemical agents, known as antimicrobial agents, biocides, or preservatives, to combat the growth and proliferation of harmful microorganisms in various industrial applications. Since 1996, an effective anti-microbial admixture has successfully protected concrete from this type of corrosion. This paper shares specific examples of tests and proof of long term protection against MIC.
