Quantity and Treatment Status of C&D Waste in China

ABSTRACT
China is urbanizing at an unprecedented rate, and the urbanization rate has tripled from 19% in 1980 to 55% in 2014. However, rapid urbanization has led to the generation of significant amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Along with other solid waste, C&D waste are dumped around outskirts, causing a series of environmental problems such as land occupation, soil, water, and dust pollutions; other problems such as landslide, which will absolutely threaten the regional ecological security. For this reason, the generation amount needs to be better understood. Therefore, the generation estimation of C&D waste in China through a calculation method presented which is based on statistical data and our surveys shows that approximately 2.5 to 3.5 billion tons of C&D waste has been produced in recent years, and the amount also shows an increasing trend. The generation amount of C&D waste in developed countries is far lower than China while the corresponding recovery rate is much higher than China. The estimation data by the method proposed and recycling rate comparison among developed countries from this study can be used to facilitate C&D waste governors and researchers to develop a more differentiated management plan specifications in different regions. What’s more, the approach proposed can also be applied to other developing countries and provide reference for the C&D waste management.
