Electricity Projects’ Development and Opportunities for Construction in Africa

ABSTRACT

Africa’s energy sector is vital to its development. Africa is turning more and more towards renewable resources to solve its rife energy poverty. When more than half of the population lack access to electricity, energy resources in Africa as a whole are more than sufficient to meet regional needs, both now and into the foreseeable future. This paper identifies and analyzes the Sub-Saharan Africa energy demand and supply, scrutinizes the energy production resources with a special focus on the continent hydropower potential. Data used in this study are from a variety of sources including literature review, regulations, policies, and statistical reports. Finally, a case study of the huge Grand Inga Dam Project in Democratic Republic of Congo is used to analyze the energy policy strategies at regional and continental level and provide possible solutions to existing problems. The findings demonstrate how the energy sector development in Africa can be a great opportunity for investors and international constructors.
