Open-Frame Equipment Structures
Publication: Snow Loads: Guide to the Snow Load Provisions of ASCE 7-16
Abstract
Open-frame equipment structures (OFESs) primarily differ from more typical buildings in that an OFES may or may not have flooring on various levels, typically does not have exterior (perimeter) walls, and commonly has exposed cable trays and piping. ASCE 7-16 requires the flat roof snow loads to be calculated with Ct = 1.2 at the topmost level with flooring. If wind-walls are present at this top-floor level, drift loads are required as per Sections 7.7 and 7.8. Section 7.13.2 requires the flat roof snow load to be applied along all such open-floored edges. If the piping or trays are at the same nominal elevation and the gap between them is small, falling snow could bridge the gap, increasing the snow load on both. This behavior resembles that resulting in a snow cornice on the leeward side of a mountain ridge.
