Chapter 14
Estimates of Irrigation Water Requirements and Streamflow Depletion
Publication: Evaporation, Evapotranspiration, and Irrigation Water Requirements
Abstract
The major component of the irrigation water requirement is the replacement of soil water depleted by evaporation and crop or landscape evapotranspiration (ET). Estimating total irrigation water requirements includes estimating various system “losses” associated with delivering water to a farm or field and the associated hydraulics and uniformity of water application to the field. The net irrigation requirement per unit area is the water that irrigation must supply to satisfy ET, leaching, and miscellaneous water requirements that water stored in the soil and precipitation that enters the soil do not provide. Depletions of the water resource caused by irrigation are equivalent to the net irrigation water requirement calculated when ET is at the potential value, which will occur when irrigation water is fully applied.
