Abstract
The pump house of a coastal power plant, adopting a direct current water intake system, is located near the sea, with features of bulky volume, large embedded depth, complex design loads and difficult construction. Pump houses of the Shenzhen Eastern power plant were constructed by floating the caisson. Each caisson weighs 5000 tons and is 30.1 meters long, 19.2 meters wide, and 10.6 meters high. After caissons were prefabricated at a specialized dock, one of them was towed to a semi-submerged barge using airbags. It was then transported to a designated place for diving and fitted into position after floating. Shipping such a large-scale caisson from a dock to a semi-submersible barge is rare in China. Moreover, it may broaden design thought and provide a new construction method for other large pump houses of coastal power plants.
