Determination of a Wall Performance in Multi-Layered Soil Conditions - A Case Study

Abstract
The need for multi-storey buildings and underground structures such as subway and metro systems in large cities often requires deep excavations. This paper reports on a study of a multi-anchored deep excavation of a business center construction in Istanbul. Five different critical cross-sections were determined and analyzed. The maximum excavation depth was 21.6 m. The support system of the wall consists of anchors and soil nailing. The lateral wall movements were monitored with inclinometers placed inside the wall, and the measurements were compared with the results of finite element (FE) analysis conducted using PLAXIS to evaluate the in situ wall behavior. The measured results were compatible with FE results. The mean values of the maximum lateral displacements of walls vary from 0.11% H to 0.317% H, where H is the excavation depth. Regression analysis was performed using this study's results and some database collection reported by the researchers. It can be said that this study's results are consistent with those reported by the researchers.
