Assessment of the Progressive Collapse Potential in Tall Buildings with 3D FE Method

Abstract
In this paper, a 3-dimensional finite element model is built by the author to analyse the progressive collapse potentials of high-rise buildings. Two different assessment methods are used in the analysis. In the first study, the alternative load path method is used for analysis. The full 3-D behaviour of the multi-story building under sudden column removal was studied. Based on this model, a direct simulation method of blast loading is also developed to assess the behaviour of the building under blast loading. The comparison between the two numerical assessment methods is made. The pros and cons of these two methods are compared.
