Airports

Publication: Wenchuan, Sichuan Province, China, Earthquake of 2008: Lifeline Performance

Abstract

Five airports are in the outskirts of Chengdu. Two are used for commercial airlines with scheduled flights, while the remaining three airports are for military use. Both commercial airports shut down for a somewhat short period and then reopened for scheduled flights. These airports experienced no electric power outage. The international airport in Chengdu suffered essentially no damage from the earthquake. Although this airport lost offsite power almost immediately, the on-site emergency generators worked, so airport operations were not affected. A few days after the earthquake, the airport closed to commercial flights because of the large number of relief supply flight traffic for two weeks. By the end of May the airport reopened to scheduled commercial traffic.
