Using Cloud Dataservice to Save Water
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2013: Showcasing the Future
Abstract
Water scarcity is a looming problem and changing both the utility and the consumer will be critical elements of achieving sustainability. Unfortunately, in today's world, the data systems employed in water utilities lack the ability to generate information at the required temporal and spatial scales necessary to be meaningful to individuals and utilities. The evolution of the Smart Grid for Water is changing that. We now have the ability to collect highly granular data from water consumers and feed that information back to them in near real time. The result is that for the first time, consumers can connect their discrete actions with their consumption and ultimately their costs. Information is the fundamental aspect of 21st century water management. Access to detailed, time-relevant data is critical to rapidly identifying water loss and reducing nonrevenue water. Using cloud computing technology, for the first time we have the ability to provide data service to customers and effect real conservation benefits.
