Effect of pH and Ionic Strength on the Removal of Fluoride from Water Using Titanium Dioxide

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2013: Showcasing the Future

Abstract

Crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) composed of mostly anatase was applied to remove fluoride from water by adsorption. A fluoride concentration of 1.15 mg/L, which is below the standard level of 1.5 mg/L was obtained within the equilibrium time of three hours from an initial fluoride solution of 5 mg/L. Greater fluoride uptake was observed at acidic pH than at alkaline pH of the solution. The removal of fluoride was not affected by sulfate and calcium in solution while bicarbonate had a negative effect on the removal of fluoride. Increasing the pH of the solution suppressed the removal of fluoride. Overall, TiO2 showed promising potential as an adsorbent for removal of fluoride from natural waters.
